President Ruto announced during a breakfast meeting with sports stakeholders and corporate leaders at State House, Nairobi, on Wednesday 3 September.
It comes as the country seeks to reverse years of mismanagement and dwindling corporate sponsorships
The committee will streamline sponsorships, manage branding and advertising for sports events, and ensure athletes receive adequate support to reach their full potential.
“Kenya is richly endowed with immense talent across the sporting spectrum, from soccer, volleyball, cricket, and rugby to athletics and more. Yet, this potential has not been fully harnessed,” President Ruto said.
He noted that the government is working with partners to nurture talent from the grassroots, aspiring to position Kenya among the world’s leading sporting nations.
“We are ensuring every gifted Kenyan has the opportunity to shine.
We aspire to elevate Kenya into the ranks of global sporting powerhouses, where our athletes compete and triumph on the world stage,” he added.
Ruto stressed that sustainable sports development requires a win-win partnership between the public and private sectors.
“We must make it win-win. If it is not win-win, it is not sustainable,” he said.
The committee will also address long-standing barriers that have discouraged private investment, including weak governance, lack of accountability, and the absence of a clear investment framework.
“Since 2022, the Sports Fund has been dedicated solely to sports development. We are committed to ensuring transparency and accountability,” Ruto said, acknowledging past mismanagement that crippled sports sponsorship, including the 2022 FKF suspension.
The government is complementing private sector efforts by investing in infrastructure, grassroots academies, and hosting major tournaments.
Kenya has already hosted the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and are in line for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
