Owaga keen on strengthening his striking and goalkeeping departments as he prepares to give the title a stab

Greensharks head coach Ben Owaga is hunting for a goalkeeper and two strikers in readiness for the Kenya Hockey Union(KHU) 2021 season set to kick off tentatively in the first week of April. The window swung open last week after the union announced that the new campaign will belatedly get underway in April.

Owaga regretted that erroneous goalkeeping and a goal-shy forward line had cost them the elusive title in the past seasons and was looking forward to bringing in quality players to flip the script. Sharks have often come close to challenging the duo of Butali Warriors and Kenya Police for the crown but occasionally ran short of gas in the second leg.

The soft-spoken tactician who is convinced that the one-month preseason period is enough to fine-tune his arsenals for the task ahead is hoping to land and incorporate his targets in the team on time.

Ahead of the season, Owaga who is eager to guide the club to its first league title has cautioned his current playing unit to brace themselves for a grueling preseason meant to sharpen them to mount an unrivaled title challenge

“I am looking for three players to beef my squad before the start of the new season. We have not convinced in front of the goal for a number of seasons and at the same time, we have been conceding cheap goals. Bringing new players in the two departments will inject competition and give me options going forward. The one-month long preseason is sufficient for me to get the players fully fit for the new season,” he revealed

While Sharks will be plotting to clinch their first league title, record women’s champions Blazers will once again be battling to retain the league without conceding a goal in the entire campaign.

It is still possible for us to achieve our dream of having unblemished results in the season. My girls have always been ready to make history," said coach Jos Openda.
