The top two teams in each group proceed to the semis slated for Saturday 9 December at Nyayo handball court

General Service Unit (GSU) men’s handball team picked their second win of the ongoing East and Central Africa Handball Federation (ECAHF) championships to keep their charge for a semis slot alive.

The ECAHF competition got underway on Sunday with GSU opening their campaign on Monday with a 29-28 lucky escape against Uganda Prisons returning for game two on Wednesday better to pick a 36-21 convincing win over Uganda’s Evergreen.

Christopher Mayende led the charge for Joseph Okemwa’s side with 11 goals in the match that the Kenyans led 17-10 at halftime before winning by a 15-goal margin.

“It was a good game, one where we stuck to our game plan and it worked. Our defense and goalkeeping won us the second game. Heading to the match, we knew their key player; their right back, was a real danger and it was evident in the opening five minutes but we adjusted quickly and shut him down,” Mark Barasa who scored 4 in the win offered.

With two group matches left to play, Barasa who is also part of the paramilitary side’s technical unit says the team is motivated to play keep winning and top pool B ahead of the semis.

Barasa says Thursday’s Kenyan derby against Equity Bank is key for GSU as a win would ensure they book a place in the semis.

“Playing Equity HC will be no walk in the park as the dynamics are different. We will look to capitalize on our speed and take all our chances as we are up against a good side.

We analysed our first match, identified the areas of concern, and adjusted coming into the second match so we will do the same before playing Equity as we go in for a win,” Barasa added.
