Gundo expected to join Kenya Morans in training

Reading Time: 2min | Wed. 03.02.21. | 16:13

He joins Morans' squad that has been in training for two weeks while Preston Bungei and Tyler Ongwae are expected next week

As preparations for the Afrobasket qualifiers set for February 17 to 21 intensify at Nyayo, national men’s basketball team Kenya Morans’ coach Sadat Gaya is expecting Ronny Gundo in camp before the end of the week.

Gundo was one of Morans’ top performers in their 79-62 victory against Mozambique in the first window of qualifiers whose matches were played in Rwanda. His 10.7 rebounds per game earned him the title of the best defensive rebounder title at the end of the tournament.

The 28-year-old also ranked eighth in the offensive rebound’s list and second in the overall rebounding chart. He was also in the top ten list of percentage shots blocked. Ahead of the November window, he had only trained with the team in Kenya for a day before traveling to Rwanda.

“We are expecting him (Gundo) before the end of the week. His availability at this point in our preparations is an added advantage and we will be able to get the best out of him. He is an integral part of the team. Whenever he turns up for Morans he plays his role impeccably and focuses on helping the team win. From the Rwanda statistics one can tell that he takes his defensive and rebounding roles seriously and executes with perfection,” said coach Gaya.

Other players expected in camp later next week are Randers Cimbria’s Preston Bungei and Bakken BearsTyler Ongwae who are playing in the Danish top-tier league.

“Consultations are ongoing with the two clubs so the players can be available as soon as possible. It is a tricky balancing act seeing that their league is still on. We are, however, confident they will be released to join the rest of the squad before we travel to Cameroon. A third player, Joel Awich is also expected to join camp soon,” Gaya expressed.

Bungei made his debut for Randers in the 125-85 demolition of bottom-ranked Amager on January 23. He was last season’s best rebounder in the Bosnian league. Ongwae has been a mainstay in the Bakken Bear’s squad and has already won two championships with the side.
