Reading Time: 2min | Tue. 11.07.23. | 10:00

Registration is expected to close after the first weekend of action.

Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) league is set to commence this month for the 2023 season with organisers predicting a December conclusion date, baring disruptions.

The 2022/23 season concluded on 2 April with the pre-season tournament, Super Cup, taking place two months later, concluding on 1 June.

Logistical challenges have, however, stalled league resumption which was expected at the beginning of the month with 22 July set as the tentative date for the league to start.

“We had projected to get action going on 15 July but the handball court at Nyayo has been booked for a different activity that weekend so we had to move the dates. Registration is still ongoing for the new league and will close after the first weekend of action,” KHF instructor George Asimeto who runs the day-to-day league action confirmed to Mozzart Sport.

Seven new teams are expected to make their debut in the top-flight league even as stakeholders push for the introduction of a lower division league, especially in the men’s category that has so far attracted 20 teams.

As currently constituted, the league has no promotion and relegation and the fight is solely for a top six and top four finish for men and women’s leagues respectively to qualify for Super Cup, in addition to the title.

Some of the new kids on the block for the men’s league include Kimilili-based Wakanda Boys, Strathmore University’s alumni team dubbed Water Bucks, Hunters- a team associated with South B-based Highway high school, Daystar men and Buccaneers Junior- a side composed of Mang’u high alumni and current players. National Youth Service (NYS) are making a comeback post Covid-19.

The women’s league will see NYS ladies’ team and Mountain Queens from central region joining.

While registration is still ongoing, some of the teams that participated in last season’s league may miss out with Nairobi City Council (NCC) teams leading the list.

According to Asimeto the NCC teams have confirmed they will not feature while Net Navigators and Rising Stars also yet to confirm.
