The event will start early on Saturday morning, with the first group of players beginning at 7:00 a.m. More than 100 golfers are expected to take part in the club’s 9-hole course.
They will all be trying to qualify for the Grand Finale, which will be held in November at Muthaiga Golf Club.
So far, the tournament has visited several golf clubs, including VetLab, Nandi Bears, Malindi, Kiambu, Kenya Railway, Nakuru, Golf Park, Thika, and most recently, Machakos. Over 40 golfers have already qualified for the final.
NCBA Group Managing Director John Gachora said, “We are happy to bring the NCBA Golf Series to Kakamega. This tournament is about growing the game and giving all kinds of golfers a chance to shine. We’re excited for a fun and competitive event.”
Ronald Omondi, captain of Kakamega Sports Club, also shared his excitement:
“We are honoured to host this tournament. Even with the recent rains, our course is in great shape. We welcome golfers from around the region to join us for a great event.”
This event follows a successful round last weekend at Machakos Golf Club, which also had over 100 players.
Joe Mboya won in the men’s category with 44 points (handicap 17). Ben Mumo and David Mwangtangi both scored 42 points, with Mwangtangi placing third after a tie-break. Maruti Litali came fourth with 41 points.
In the women’s category, Ruth Mbeti (handicap 33) scored 40 points to win. Mercy Nderitu was second with 35 points.
Junior Golf Tournament set for Friday at Windsor
Meanwhile, junior golfers will also compete this weekend. On Friday, May 16, 2025, the second NCBA Interschool Golf Tournament will take place at Windsor Golf Hotel & Country Club. A total of 168 juniors from 27 schools will take part.
This event is organised by the Junior Golf Foundation (JGF) together with NCBA Bank. It includes new schools like Consolata School Nairobi, Nova Pioneer-Tatu Primary, Pioneer Junior School, and Sun and Shield Primary & Junior School in Nakuru.
The tournament is open to both experienced (handicapped) and beginner players. It is part of JGF’s “Get Into Golf Initiative,” which helps children get involved in golf from a young age.
The tournament is divided into four age groups:
10 years and under
11–12 years
13–14 years
15–18 years
Each school sends a team of four players, and the best three scores count toward the team’s result.
Some of the participating schools include: The Banda School, Braeburn, Braeside, Crawford, Hillcrest, ISK, Lenana, Makini, Peponi, Premier, Rusinga, Nairobi Academy, and others.
In the last tournament held in March, St. Ruth School won the 10-and-under category, while Home School teams won in the 11–14 and 15–18 categories.
NCBA’s sponsorship has helped JGF support more children in golf, especially girls, differently abled kids, and those from low-income backgrounds. The goal is to grow not just good golfers, but also responsible young people.
JGF President Vincent Mukiri said, “What makes this tournament special is the teamwork and growing support from schools.
Through our golf program, we’re making sure every child gets a chance to play, no matter their background.”
This is the second of three school tournaments this year. The final one, called the NCBA Lisle Shaw Interschool Tournament, will be held in October 2025.
It will be for juniors with official handicaps and will offer a more competitive experience at the national level.
