The team faces Canada in the semi final scheduled for Wednesday 9 August.

Kenyan duo of Sharon Jepkosgei and Abigael Chebet from Kaboson Girls High School have stormed into the semifinals of the girls’ beach volleyball at the ongoing Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad & Tobago.

The team, yet to drop a set in the championship, won their group matches by straight sets; first against Bermuda before downing hosts Trinidad & Tobago to storm the knockout stages.

Pitted against England in the quarter final, the Charles Owino-coached girls left nothing to chance as they fought hard to finish the match off in two sets for another straight-sets victory.

“We had a good first set but England came back strong for the second. We had lost our footing for a short while but had to fight and recover for the win that helped us avoid a decider third set.

It is amazing to be here and to be competing at this level. We are making good progress and are looking forward to getting to the final,” Chebet offered.

Coach Owino lauded the duo for working together to cover each other in such a crucial clash, maintaining that the team is ready to face Canada in the semis.

“The girls are better with each match. In the quarters, whenever one was a bit down the partner was able to step up and fight for the team which was the winning aspect for us.

Going into the semis, we are looking forward to another win that would see us through to the title match which has been the target all along. We carry the same strategy that we have had in the last three matches to the crucial semis. I will, however, train them on some drills on reception to improve their agility and speed,” offered Owino.

On her part Chebet reiterates the coach’s sentiments of sticking to the basics while formulating a plan to beat Canada.

We know we are up against a strong team so we are leaving nothing to chance. We have to fight, just like we have in the other matches, for a win,” she added.
