Kenya Hockey Union names squads for Africa Cup of Nations duty

In the last edition held in Accra, Ghana, in 2022, the Kenya men’s team finished fourth after a 4–2 defeat to Nigeria in the third-place playoff, while the women’s side clinched bronze, beating Zimbabwe 3–1 in post-match shootouts

The Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) has unveiled the men’s and women’s national teams that will represent the country at the Africa Cup of Nations (ACN) 2025, scheduled for 11–18 October in Ismailia, Egypt.

The women’s head coach, Meshack Senge, has named an 18-player squad featuring a contingent from Strathmore University, Blazers, Lakers, and USIU.

Strathmore dominates the defensive line with; Lynne Tamunai, Rachael Khamala, Vanessa Sudi, Diana Bariti, and Grace Bwire, while Blazers contribute stalwarts such as; Vivian Onyango, Caroline Guchu, Eleanor Chebet, Maureen Okumu, and Aurelia Opondo.

Kenya’s attacking hopes will rest on Rayana Oyando (USIU) and Opondo, supported by a midfield marshalled by; Grace Akumu (USIU), Maureen Achieng (Lakers), and Alice Owiti (Lakers).

The goalkeeping department features Rebecca Nasambu (Strathmore) and Quinter Okore (Lakers).

Officials for the women’s team include; team manager Esther Mwikali, coach Senge, assistant coach Josephine Ataro, physio Rebecca Kaumba, and doctor Carole Okoth, with Elynah Sifuna serving as safeguarding officer.

Umpire Linah Barasa and technical official Caren Koloni will also officiate during the tournament.

Men’s head coach Michael Malungu has named a squad anchored by a strong Western Jaguars presence, complemented by players from Butali Warriors, Sikh Union, USIU, and Daikyo Heroes.

Samuel Silong (USIU) and Joshua Omondi (Kenya Police) will share goalkeeping duties, while the defensive line will feature; Charles Ashihundu, Moses Muigai (Western Jaguars), Mathias Gularire (Sikh Union), Kennedy Munialo, and Edson Ndombi (Butali Warriors).

The midfield is Western Jaguars-heavy, with Fred Ouma, Brian Azeze, and Ivan Ludiali joined by Cliffe Omari (Sikh Union), James Muthii (USIU), and Linton Nayombe (USIU).

Up front, Bethuel Masambu, Alex Taiswa (Western Jaguars), Moses Ademba (Butali Warriors), Vincent Wesonga (Daikyo Heroes), and Sutcliffe Usagi (Sikh Union) will carry the scoring burden.

The technical bench is led by team manager Godfrey Bila, coach Malungu, assistant coaches Griffin Okombe and Joseph Osino, and physio Michael Maitha.

KHU President Randiek Nashon will serve as head of delegation. Umpire Titus Ngolia and technical official Peter Mwathe have also been confirmed for officiating duties.

After Namibia withdrew both their teams from the competitions, the Kenyan men’s team will compete against hosts Egypt, Ghana, Zambia, South Africa, and Nigeria.

The women’s side will be up against South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, and hosts Egypt.
