The competition, governed by the World Phygital Community (WPC), merges physical sports with esports, introducing a revolutionary concept to Kenya's sporting scene

Esports Kenya is gearing up to host the first-ever Kenya Phygital Cup on Saturday 25 January 2025, at the Uhuru Sports Complex in Nairobi.

This groundbreaking event will see 32 teams competing for a chance to represent Kenya at the prestigious Games of the Future 2025 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The competition, governed by the World Phygital Community (WPC), merges physical sports with esports, introducing a revolutionary concept to Kenya's sporting scene.

Teams will compete in two categories: phygital football and phygital basketball, with 16 slots available in each.

Phygital football combines a 5v5 soccer match with a PlayStation 5 game, while Phygital basketball pairs a 2v2 basketball game with a PlayStation 5 contest.

This innovative fusion of physical and digital gameplay aims to elevate sports to new dimensions, blending athleticism with cutting-edge technology.

Speaking to Mozzart Sport, Esports Kenya President Ronny Lusigi shared his enthusiasm for the event, expressing Kenya’s readiness to host the event.

Phygital is an innovative and exciting concept. In this era of digital advancement, fusing the digital and physical worlds of sport is of great importance to humanity.

We look forward to seeing an exciting national competition and a good performance for those who make it to Dubai for the Games of the Future 2025 courtesy of the World Phygital Community (WPC),” Lusigi said.

The Kenya Phygital Cup is set to attract teams and fans from across the country, eager to experience this trailblazing approach to sports.

This milestone event positions Kenya as a significant player in the rapidly expanding global esports scene, aligning the nation with a worldwide movement that bridges traditional athleticism with technological innovation.

Registration is now open, and teams are encouraged to secure their slots promptly. The event promises to be a thrilling showcase of talent, blending the passion of traditional sports with the precision and strategy of gaming.

In November 2024, the Esports Kenya Federation partnered with Agon by AOC as its official gaming monitor partner ahead of the 2025 Olympic Esports Games.

The global esports stage is also transforming.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recently announced the creation of the Olympic Esports Games, with the inaugural event set for 2025 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

This decision endorsed unanimously at the 142nd IOC Session in Paris, marks a significant shift toward integrating esports into the Olympic movement.
