Kenyan women's beach volleyball seals qualification to the Commonwealth Games

Kenya handed a wildcard to the Games

The Kenyan women’s beach volleyball team will grace the Commonwealth Games slated for July 28 to August 8 in Birmingham after landing a wildcard.

The team had initially failed to seal a place in the games after finishing third in the qualifiers held in Ghana last month.

The pair of Naomi Too and Veronicah Adhiambo claimed bronze in the qualifiers but was not enough to send them to Birmingham as the tickets were only available for the winners of either category.

The duo who were preferred for the qualifiers at the expense of experienced Olympians Gaudencia Makokha and Brackcides Agala.

The men’s team that was constituted by Ibrahim Oduor and James Mwaniki finished fourth after falling to Ghana in the third place playoff. Similarly, the ladies lost to Ghana in the semifinals.

In a letter addressed to the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) President Paul Tergat, the Commonwealth Games Federation Sports Director Ann-Loise Morgan confirmed that the ladies team had been handed a slot for the showpiece.

In accordance with the published Beach Volleyball Athlete Allocation System (Version 4) for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the CGF and Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) are pleased to officially confirm your qualification,” read part of the letter.
