Onyango, 27, has taken his place among the top boxers in the country, leading to the South African-based promotions handing him a reward for his effort.

Since penning a deal with the Pan-African boxing promoter late last year, Onyango has gone on to secure three wins on the spin, all while landing his biggest accolade in his career.

The 28-year-old, who began his boxing life as an amateur in Umoja, landed his first victory under Kalakoda in November 2025, when he secured a unanimous decision win over Tanzania’s Bariki Solomoni Aibon, before repeating the same exploits against another Tanzanian - Ernest Kapinga - in February this year.

Having held the tag of being Kenya's leading super welterweight, Onyango went a step further in May this year, when he got the best of Tanzania’s Benjamin Mchunguzi in a 10-round thriller, to be crowned as the new East and Central African super welterweight champion.

“I had a national title, now I have and East and Central African title,” Onyango told the promotions after landing his new 12-month deal. “I did not imagine I could be a professional fighter, but I just wanted to shine. It feels nice, at least it shows that the hard work I have put is starting to pay off.”

A source with knowledge of the deal confirmed to Mozzart Sport that the new contract will carry winning clauses, and should involve Onyango making an appearance in at least three fights in 2027.

Early projections on his career path indicate that Onyango will fight again this year, where he is set to vie for one of the vacant super welterweight Commonwealth titles.

Should that be achieved, then the next phase of Onyango’s career will lift off, with a decision on his hands on which opponent best makes sense for him.
