Mills will be the first woman head coach of a men's basketball team in Morocco

Trailblazing Australian basketball coach Liz Mills has made sporting history yet again as she is set to become the first woman to coach a professional men's team in Morocco.

In an announcement made, the former Kenya Morans head coach has been hired by AS Sale, who compete in Morocco's top division, and will be the first female head coach in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) when the joint NBA-FIBA competition starts its second season next month.

"It is with great pleasure that we confirm the hiring of coach Liz Mills as head of AS Sale's technical staff for the rest of the season with the possibility to renew if mutually agreed. This is a first in Morocco and in the Arab world," the team said.

Previously, the Australian had already made history by becoming the first female head coach at a men's Afrobasket tournament when she led Kenya to the continental championship last summer after a 28-year absence on the continental scene.

"Excited to announce I'm joining (AS Sale) as the head coach for the upcoming (BAL) season and the (Moroccan) national league," Mills posted on her Twitter page.

Brigitte Affidehome Tonon was the first female head coach of an African men's national team in 2017 for Benin.

Mills, a Sydney native, had been an assistant at club and national level in Africa for a decade before being hired as Kenya's head coach.

Her stay at the Kenyan national team however came to an unceremonious end as players expressed a ‘Vote of no Confidence’ in her management style in a tell-all letter signed by majority of the national team members.

The Australian outlined, in an elaborate write up, events preceding her exit and defended her actions while calling out a bunch of entitled players whose sole agenda was to keep their places in the team while not doing enough to earn their positions.
