Maina challenges Hawks to improve as KBF second leg beckons

The bankers are looking to dethrone the seemingly flawless Antony Ojukwu-led KPA

Former Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) women's league champions Equity Hawks' head coach David Maina has admitted to the team's struggles in this season's campaign ahead of the second leg.

With one match to the conclusion of their first leg, the bankers find themselves in unfamiliar territory, having lost twice to holders Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) and Zetech Sparks.

The tactician has called on his charges to get their act together and rally for an unbeaten run in the second leg as they look to finish top of the table ahead of the playoffs.

"Our target for the regular league was to finish top of the table as that sets the stage for an easier playoff pairing and format of play. However, we have dug ourselves into a hole that we need to claw out of," offered Maina.

He continued, "As a team we need to improve on defense but individually, there are players that have to improve on more especially their commitment to the team. There is no way a team will win games convincingly when all the players are not at the same level of output. All players have to give the team the highest level of production if we are to fight for the league."

Maina did not spare his not-so-new signings for the 2022/23 season who are yet to gel with the rest of the squad with the first leg almost done.

"This is a concern because we have played ten matches that should have presented the new recruits enough time to gel with the team but some are yet to get there. This has to change because failure to gel means we will continue struggling in the second leg," he offered.

KPA lead the standings at 22 points, unbeaten in the first leg with Hawks second on 1i points after ten matches, tied on points with Storms who have won seven of their 11 matches in the first leg.

Sparks, who have lost once to the dockers in nine matches, are fourth on the log at 17 points with two matches on their cards. University of Nairobi Dynamites complete the top five places on 17 points with a match to play in the first leg.
