Fierce financial consequences await the franchise's 'poster-boy' due to extremely irresponsible behavior
The disciplinary committee decided, and commissioner Adam Silver confirmed, that Ja Morant will miss the opening 25 games of the season due to a suspension following a new incident in which he was seen on social media waiving a gun. The first time, when he did it in a nightclub, he got away with a symbolic punishment and admonition (an eight-game ban which he served). The second time the NBA league had no mercy.
Maybe the 25-game suspension is a small punishment because Ja Morant is still one of the biggest basketball stars today and someone who should be a role model for the youth, but the fact that he won't play is nothing compared to the financial losses that await him.
Morant will be $7,600,000 short in salary due to the 25 games he will not play, so his projected salary for the 2023-24 season will be closer to $26,000,000 instead of $33,500,000. A reminder - the first time he was punished for extremely irresponsible behavior, he paid a financial fine of 668,659 dollars.
The projected losses are now over $50,000,000!
"He's not going to get paid for the 25 games he's not going to play, he's not getting paid for the eight games he's missed this year, and I have no doubt that he would have been a member of the league's best line-up if it hadn't been for that first incident," NBA analyst Brian Windhorst said.
"The fact that he was not selected in the ideal five of the league left him without 40,000,000 dollars in bonuses! Therefore, his losses could be closer to the sum of 60,000,000 dollars, when sponsorship contracts are also taken into account".

Interestingly, the American manufacturer of sports equipment, Nike, came out with a statement in which it even took the side of Ja Morant, which shocked many. Not long after, Nike pulled all of Morant's signature sneakers from its website, even though the new line was released in time and sold out within minutes.
