Morans are looking to finish the Afrobasket qualifiers on a high with a win against Mozambique.
National men's basketball team, Kenya Morans, will not rest on their laurels when they face rivals Mozambique in their last group B match at the ongoing Afrobasket qualifiers in Cameroon.
Kenya, against all odds, made history on Saturday, 20 February night as they beat record 11-time Afrobasket championship title holders Angola 74-73 to get the much-needed win to the August 2021 championship.
"We are elated for the win since we respect Angola so much, they are a powerhouse. We came in knowing their pedigree and that is why the win means so much to us. Punching a ticket to Rwanda is great and we are excited to be there. We still have one match left against Mozambique and we want to go out with a win. Yes, we beat a powerhouse but we are staying focused and are going home with two wins," said an elated Mills after the Angola win.
During the November qualification window, Morans had to fight from three points down against Mozambique in the first half to win 79-62 after an excellent second-half play. The win kept Morans' dreams of returning to the Afrobasket championship alive as they needed just a win to seal the ticket.
However, the homeboys were not comfortable leaving that fate to the last match and fought from an 11-point deficit in the first half of the Angola match to win by half a basket.
In November, Morans dominated Mozambique on almost all fronts but for points on the paint. The Kenyans had 13 points from turnover against the opponent's 10, 26 from fast breaks against 22 and 14 second-chance points against 8. Mozambique, however, were unstoppable on the paint as they made 40 points against Morans' 24
To ensure that Mozambique get no chance at a win, Mills' charges will need to play tight defence, denying their opponent of the day a chance to penetrate to the paint.
