Members of Kapsoit Ward in Kericho County have a reason to smile after Mozzart Bet Kenya, a leading gaming firm, addressed their persistent water challenges by launching a borehole on Friday, September 6.
The borehole, located at Cheplel Primary School, was handed over to the community in a colourful event that marked the end of their long struggle to access the most basic commodity in life—water.
The project is part of Mozzart Bet's 'Action 100 Wells' programme, which aims to help communities gain access to clean drinking water, improving the quality of life for those who benefit.
As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Mozzart Bet has been regularly drilling boreholes across the country to combat water shortages.
The water project, fully funded by Mozzart Bet at a cost of Ksh 3.5 million, features a solar-powered borehole that discharges four cubic meters of water per hour.
Sasa Krneta, the company's Country Manager, reaffirmed Mozzart Bet’s commitment to supporting communities and pledged to continue drilling more boreholes.
“I am very happy to be here to observe this milestone. Supporting the community is our mission, and this project marks our 15th borehole across the country. This borehole will greatly benefit the 600 pupils here.
Beyond the borehole, our investment of Ksh 3.5 million also includes solar power, which the school can use without relying on electricity. We are doing this across Kenya, and our work will not stop here; we will continue to visit other counties,” Krneta stated.
Philip Sang, the school’s head teacher, expressed his gratitude on behalf of the institution and the community.
He noted that the water project would not only resolve water-related conflicts between the pupils and the community but also reduce class delays and absenteeism.
“I want to thank Mozzart Bet for the wonderful job they have done. We are immensely grateful because water is life. Previously, we faced significant water problems, which caused delays in class, absenteeism, and conflicts with the community when we sent students to fetch water from the streams. Now, that issue will be a thing of the past,” said Sang.
Before Mozzart drilled the borehole, students had to walk 3.5 km to fetch water from streams, which were often scarce.
Edna Rono, a resident, praised Mozzart for the noble initiative that has not only solved the school’s water challenges but also made it easier for locals to access clean water, improving the efficiency of their daily activities.
Ann Too, Director at BCLB, was present to commend the company for coming to the rescue of Cheplel and the community.
She could hardly contain her excitement and urged the company to continue its impactful initiatives.
"I'm beyond excited about this project because it's exactly what we've been hoping for in this area. We desperately needed water, and I'm proud to be a part of bringing this vital resource to my community. Water is the best thing that has ever happened to us, and I sincerely hope that Mozzart never tires of helping communities," expressed Too.
County Executive in charge of Water, Environment, Energy, Forestry, and Natural Resources, Rosemary Chepkirui, expressed gratitude to Mozzart for their positive impact on the Cheplel community.
"We deeply appreciate what you have done, and we know the community will benefit greatly," she said.
Miss Universe Kenya 2024, Irene Ngendo, who will represent the country in Mexico under Mozzart Bet’s sponsorship, encouraged students to take advantage of the company’s initiatives and focus on their education.
"You are the seeds, and Mozzart has provided the water. Now, you must grow and transform your community," she urged.
Laban Chege from AGOK urged residents to take responsibility for maintaining the project.
"As you’ve been told, the community has been given water, but it’s your responsibility to keep it running for a long time," remarked Chege.
Chege’s remarks were echoed by Frank Ochieng, Mozzart’s Head of Marketing and CSR who also urged the community leaders to now put up a water tower to ensure the water is piped to the greater extends of the Cheplel community and it’s environs.
