With a possible exit of opposite Peter Kamara and outside hitter Dennis Omollo who are looking to land professional stints this season, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) men’s volleyball side have their work cut out as the new season serves off next month.
Head coach Sammy Mulinge, while confirming that the duo is likely to leave the club, says he is looking to sign some young players meant to serve the club for the long haul as they continue their quest for the elusive title.
“We have already identified some players we want to joint the squad. However, we have gone for young players as getting players that can replace the caliber that is Enock Mogeni or the two players expected to leave if the opportunity arises is a tall order.
We have elected to go for young talents. We have already identified the said players but plans to have them officially joining the team are still being finalised. We are alive to the fact that when the paramilitary teams are recruiting we will lose more players as they are offering jobs, but as at now, we still have last season’s squad,” offered Mulinge.
The Mombasa-based side is yet to begin training, with the tactician saying he would have wanted to have the team in camp at the beginning of November as they have had a long layoff.
“I am hoping to have the squad in training soon as we have been out of action since the playoffs and we need time to regroup ahead of the first leg in Kapsabet,” Mulinge continued.
The tactician has, however, taken issue with the league returning to its former format of playing outdoors in counties, arguing that it is a retrogressive step.
“We had made progress, however minimal playing at Nyayo. While there has been a promise that we will be back indoor in the event of a sponsor, what we had, playing a small percentage of the matches indoor was a step in the right direction,” he opines.
