Muthaiga Golf Club are the champions of the 97th edition of the Tannahill Shield golf tournament played at the par 72 Royal Nairobi Golf Club course on Sunday.

Muthaiga Golf Club’s team scored an impressive four rounds total of 53 points, five points better than what they managed last year, to retain the prestigious title.

The team picked up a total of 12 points from Western and Limuru in the fourth round to beat hosts Royal Nairobi and Kenya Railway Golf Clubs by 17 points.

At the same time, both Royal and Railways tied for the second position each having scored 10 points in the final round for a total of 36 points.

Coming in fourth was the combined team of Western who scored 35 points, five points ahead of fifth-placed Mombasa Golf Club who scored 30 points.

Tying for sixth place was Sigona and Limuru Country Club on 26 points each while Vet Lab and Karen tied in last place with 23 points each.

Speaking during the tournament, Royal Nairobi Golf Club Chairman, Bernard Mwaura lauded the tournament's growth into a premier amateur event.

“This growth has been occasioned by the competitive spirit amongst the various participating clubs. We have seen top-class golfing that was on display over the weekend.

Tannahill Shield has aided the development of golf talent in the country as every club identifies and nurtures talented golfers to represent them. A bigger and more Junior Tannahill will further aid in such development," Mwaura said.

On her part, EABL’s Head of Media Futures Waithera Kabiru congratulated Royal Nairobi Golf Club for achieving this incredible milestone as 97 years is by no means a small feat.

"It takes a great deal of dedication and commitment to successfully organize and host a tournament of this stature for such a long period of time. The event has shown that the sport continues to be well embraced by many people in the country, which is a really positive step towards taking the sport to the next level,” she said.

A total of nine teams participated in the tournament, which returned to its traditional Easter season.

The tournament was sponsored by Kenya Breweries Limited through its Johnnie Walker brand, among others.
