Nairobi’s BoxGirls nominated for Laureus Sport for Good Award

BoxGirls was founded in 2007 with its program reaching over 900 young girls aged 8-23 years
BoxGirls Kenya, a small, youthful and dynamic organization based in Kariobangi, Nairobi and aimed at using boxing to tackle issues affecting girls in marginalized communities has landed a nomination for the 2023 Laureus Sport for Good Award.
In an announcement made on Monday evening, BoxGirls, alongside four other inspirational sport programmes were shortlisted for the award that celebrates social programmes which have made a significant contribution to transforming the lives of children and young people through sport.
The other nominees include; TeamUp – a Dutch movement based psychosocial support intervention developed by War Child, UNICEF and Save the Children offering support to refugees from Ukraine, India’s Slum Soccer – aimed at educating and elevating homeless populations in India, Made for More – a South African initiative making sports inclusive for people with disabilities and High Five – a German organization helping migrant and orphaned children to integrate in new communities.
“The inspirational organization BoxGirls Kenya, which uses the sport of boxing to tackle issues affecting girls in marginalized communities has been shortlisted for our Laureus Sport for Good Award,” a statement from Laureus on Monday.
This marks the second time BoxGirls have been nominated for the award, having previously been shortlisted in 2021. Kickformore by Kickfair won that year’s award.

If they were to win in the spring this year, BoxGirls would join Moving the Goalposts and Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) as the two Kenyan sports organizations to win the prestigious award.
Moving the Goalposts won the award in 2016 while MYSA scooped the honors in 2004. Kipchoge Keino won the award in 2001 for his humanitarian work in Eldoret, Kenya.
In other categories, Argentinian star Lionel Messi headlines the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year nominees alongside Max Verstappen, Rafael Nadal, Stephen Curry, Mondo Duplantis and Kylian Mbappe.
In the Sportswoman of the Year award, 100m five time champion Shelly-Anne Fraser Pryce will face off Alexia Putellas, Iga Swiatek, Mikaela Shiffrin, Katie Ledecky and Olympics 400m champion Sydney McLaughlin.
