Martha is making a second go at qualification after missing out at the Africa Qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal last year
African Games bronze medalist Amina Martha will be the fourth Kenyan to step into the ring at the 2nd World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Bangkok, Thailand when she features in her women’s bantamweight Round of 32 bout against Canadian boxer Scarlett Delgado.
Martha, who made the cut to the traveling squad after her exploits in Ghana this year - when she became Kenya’s first female boxer to medal at the African Games - will face a stern test against the Canadian three-time champion, who won a silver medal at the 2024 USA Boxing International Invitational in Pueblo, Colorado.
The fight will take place in the evening session and the third of the bantamweight contests.
Two Kenyan boxers on Monday however saw their chances for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games go up in smoke after losing on points in their respective bouts.
First off was African Games champion Edwin Okong’o, who lost to 5-0 (30-26, 29-27, 29-27, 30-26, 30-26) to Mongolia’s Dalai Ganzorig, before Summer Games hopeful Elizabeth Andiego was dismissed 5-0 (28-29, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27) by Germany’s Irina Nicoletta Schoenberger.
And while Okong’o will leave with the delight of a win on opening day against Mali’s Mahamadou Gory in the Round of 64, Andiego suffers another Olympic qualifiers setback after going out in the African qualifiers and failed to go through the 1st Qualification tournament in Busto Arsizio, Italy.
The two now join Boniface Mugunde as the Hit Squad members who are already down and out.
