The final team consists of seven young golfers; 3 girls and 4 boys

With days and counting leading to the 2023 All Africa Junior Team Championships AAJTC) set for 15-21 April this year, the Junior Golf Federation has in addition to naming a strong Kenyan side to grace the tournament, reiterated its firm commitment to polishing the young group of golfers.

JGF last week came up with a list of 20 young golfers who were invited into a training session whose aim was to come up with a final team that will grace the upcoming championships set to be staged at the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Club in Kampala, Uganda.

The selection process involved a Muthaiga Open qualifying tournament that trimmed down the squad from 14 golfers (with six out of the twenty being unavailable) and later to a final squad of seven golfers.

The seven include; Lee Kimathi, Krish Shah, Mikael Kihara and Junaid Manji for the boys category and the trio of Chanelle Wangari, Belinda Wanjiru and Audrey Gachora in the girls category.

Speaking about the first weeks of training at the Muthaiga Golf Club and Vipingo Ridge, JGF Trustee Vincent Mukiri Mwangi talked about the whole environment - where the junior golfers were granted free entry in the Magical Kenya Open championships and even had an opportunity to interact with various senior and professional golfers.

“The professional golfers also came and talked to the juniors about their life stories and how they made it to the top,” Mukiri said. “The juniors were excited because they could connect what they are doing now and where they are headed. Some of the professional golfers from outside are young, just before their 20s. Some of our juniors are between 12 and 14 years; they have about five years to get there.”

In readiness for departure to Uganda, the seven golfers will now enter into ten days of high performance training with the hope of shining in the six days championships.
