Nanyuki High School, Crawford International School and Mt. Kenya Academy among schools expected to participate on Saturday

Various schools in Kiambu County have confirmed their participation in the upcoming Kenya Swimming Federation Mt.Kenya Swimming Bloc Swimming Championships slated for Saturday April 1 at the Mpesa Foundation School in Thika.

Among the schools that have confirmed their participation thus far include; Nanyuki High School, Crawford International School, Mt. Kenya Academy, Bloomington Academy, Nyeri Good Shepherd Academy, Alliance Girls and St. Christopher Nanyuki. Additional teams are expected to grace the event that will follow up the county’s level 2 and minnows championships held last week.

Aga Khan Academy last Saturday were declared the champions of the Kiambu County Minnows Swimming Championships that were held at Braeburn Imani International School with Super Marlins Swim Club and Potterhouse School Runda finishing first and second runners-up.

On Saturday, the bloc championships will be used to select a team of 100 swimmers that will take part in the Kampala Invitational Swimming Championships set for next month, with the Dubai Hamilton Aquatics Development Swimming Championships scheduled for June this year.

“Plans are underway to have more public schools engaged in the sport despite most public schools tending to concentrate much on examinations and examination scores at the expense of physical growth and overall health of the learners,” KSF Kiambu Executive Committee member Joseph Ndung’u said.

In addition, the patron of Mt. Kenya Swimming Bloc patron Bernand Mathu said that the region aims at rivaling other swimming blocs like Coast Amateur Swimming Association (CASA) that has dominated galas and international meets in the past.

“We want to pick a strong team that will represent us in both Uganda and Dubai that's why preparations have kicked off in earnest in readiness for the double high profile events,” coach and Mt. Kenya Swimming Bloc Secretary Ali Omar commented on the gala preparations. “All those seeking to participate in the Thika contest should prepare sufficiently because of the high level of competition expected to be witnessed.”

With support coming from Kiambu County Government chairman Stanley Mwangi Kaberu, the county hopes that as much as they would love to excel in the championships like Kenya did in the CANA zone three swimming championships last year, that sports promotion among youths is achieved.

Among the sponsors for the event include; Ribena, Manji Biscuits, Optiven Real Estate, Avenue Healthcare and Muthokinju Paints.
