South Sudanese Gong Thon Gong continued his dominance of local events after winning the Bungoma Open Chess Championships held at Tourist Hotel over the weekend.

Gong, who had earlier won the KCB Open one week ago, collected a maximum of six points and pocketed Ksh40,000 for his efforts.
The South Sudanese local plays for Mavens Chess Club and has been on a roll this year, making last weekend’s victory his fourth so far.
It has also been a financially rewarding year for Thon as he had pocketed Ksh100,000 for winning the KCB tournament.
KCB’s Felix Boera finished runner-up after collecting five points. In third place was Gabriel Njuki, who also collected five points.
Rishit Rivat from Victoria Chess Club managed fourth position, also on five points, with Kaloki Hawi playing for KCB completing the top five standings on 4.5 points.
The ladies’ category was won by Kaloki Zuri from Mavens Chess Club. She collected five points. Ajackio Nicole from Bungoma DEB School was placed in second spot with four points, while Kimani Wanjiru, who was representing NCBA Bank, came home third with four points.
Given that Adriel from Kitale School won the junior boys category with six points, Kibo Dave finished in second place. He had five points. The Junior girls’ category was won by Neriah Achoge on 5.5 points.
Mehul GohilAfter the Bungoma Open tournament, former national champion Mehul Gohil leads in the grand prix standings and is assured of an opportunity to play in the Kenya National Chess Championships at the end of December.
Jardon Simiyu, Brian Irungu, Martin Njoroge, Felix Boera, Lenny Mataiga, Joseph Methu, Kaloki Hawi and Ezekiel Karani complete the top ten rankings.
In the ladies’ category, Gloria Jumba from KCB leads, followed by team-mate Joyce Nyaruai, Sasha Mongeli, Nashipae Bella, Jully Mutisya, Elizabeth Cassidy, Nicole Albright, Ether Karanja, Zuri Kaloki, and Kimani Wanjiru follow in that order.
The next grand prix event is the Nakuru Open tournament to be held on Saturday, 15 and Sunday, 16 November.
