The team, only formed in 2021, will be making their continental championships debut in July

South Sudan women's basketball team has made more history after being awarded - alongside Guinea - the final two wildcards for the 2025 FIBA Women's AfroBasket.

In an announcement by the FIBA Regional Office for Africa on Tuesday, South Sudan's Bright Starlets will make the continental championships for their first time ever.

South Sudan, only formed in 2021, finished third in the FIBA Africa Zone 5 qualifiers for this year's African Championship last month.

Having only won once in the regional qualifiers, Carlos Alberto's side won three games in Cairo - notably beating experienced Kenya twice.

Their losses to eventual winners Uganda and hosts Egypt however saw them miss out on a place to Abidjan, which has now been handed to them to complete the full list of 12 nations taking part in the competition expected to run from 25 July to 3 August.

Guinea, who in 2021 and 2023 also received wildcards for the tournament, join Egypt and Mozambique, who received their invitations earlier this month.

Full list of teams competing in this year's Women's AfroBasket:

Côte d'Ivoire (hosts), Nigeria (2023 champions), Senegal (2023 runners-up), Mali (2023 bronze medallists), Rwanda (2023 fourth-placers), Cameroon (Zone 4 qualifiers), Uganda (Zone 5 qualifiers), Angola (Zone 6 qualifiers), Egypt (wildcard), Mozambique (wildcard), South Sudan (wildcard) and Guinea (wildcard).
