Team Kenya sweep two Gold medals, rank top in regional tennis tourney held in Burundi

Kenya’s 12-member team sent to take part at the International Tennis Federation East African Junior Teams’ Competition (14 & 16 years and under) that was held in Bujumbura, Burundi started the year with a bang as they finished first in the five-team event that took place from 7-14 January 2023.

Additionally, the Girls 14 & Under and the Girls 16 & Under teams beat every possible opposition from Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi and Uganda to clinch two Gold medals in their respective categories as the boys (14 & Under) took silver while the 16 & Under settled for bronze.

The results ensured the Girls (14 & Under) successfully defended their title as the Boys (14 & Under) surrendered their crown to hosts Burundi. The Girls (16 & Under) upgraded their status from silver to gold.

Kenya topped the overall event on 1200 points with Burundi coming in second place on 1040 points.

Uganda (710) finished third ahead of Tanzania (450) and Rwanda (395).

The Bujumbura regional event was serving as a qualifier for the African Junior Championship for 14 and 16 & under scheduled for later this year.
