Barthes Cup: Chipu out to finish strong against Madagascar

Chipu's clash against Madagascar is slated for a 2 PM kick off.

The Kenya rugby under 20 men’s side, Chipu will be aiming for a podium finish when they take on Madagascar in the 2022 Barthes Cup third-place playoffs on Sunday 17 April.

Curtis Olago's charges suffered a 16-5 defeat at the hands of arch-rivals Namibia in the semi-finals to crash out of the tournament on Wednesday after winning the last two editions.

The third-place playoffs pitting Kenya and Madagascar will be a repeat of the 2021 final after Chipu edged the Islanders 21-20 to retain the title they won back in 2019 after the 2020 edition failed to take place due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Madagascar dropped out of contention for the Cup after suffering a 32-3 whitewash at the hands of Zimbabwe after initially getting past a hapless Zambia side in the quarters.

In the final, African 15s rugby powerhouse Namibia will contest the final against Zimbabwe who have been magnificent after beating Tunisia in the quarters and getting past Madagascar in the last four.

Cote D’Ivoire who have had a tournament to forget thus far will open proceedings on Sunday with a clash against Zambia in the 7/8th playoff with both sides looking to record their first victory in the tournament.

Neighbors Uganda who beat Cote D’Ivoire in the placement matches will then face Tunisia in the 5/6th place playoff in the second match.
