County Rugby 15s Round-up: Koyonzo, Bungoma, Nakuru, St Mary’s Yala through to the regionals

Bungoma, Nakuru, Kapsabet, St Mary’s Yala, St Anthony’s, Kisii, and Vihiga Boys have qualified for the regionals of the county rugby 15s scheduled to take place in different regions in the country.

Bungoma, Kimobo sail through
Bungoma High School games emerged as the winners in the Bungoma County Rugby 15s School games after seeing off Kimobo High School 6-0 in the final.
Bungoma managed two successful penalty kicks in the closely contested match. So intense was the match that neither team conceded any tries throughout the game.
Both Bungoma High School and Kimobo High School will advance to represent the county in the upcoming Western Region Championship in Vihiga starting on 19 March 2024.
Nakuru outclass Koelel Forces
Nakuru High were crowned champions after securing a crucial 6-3 win over Koelel Forces High School in a highly competitive clash which saw no try scored.
The match was decided courtesy of two penalty kicks. Nakuru Boys High School and Koelel Forces Boys High School will proceed to the Rift Valley Regional Games in Kapsabet Boys on the 19th of March 2024.
In the girl’s category, Gilgil Town Secondary were crowned the champions after they managed 2/2 wins in the matches played in a round-robin format.
Kapsabet sail through
Kapsabet Boys outclassed strong opponents in the Nandi County final, securing their spot in the regional games scheduled for the 18th of this month.
Kapsabet displayed excellent form throughout the county championship, dominating their opponents with convincing wins.
In a hard-fought final against Kipsigak Secondary School, Kapsabet clinched a narrow 6-0 win, with scrum-half Lawi booting two crucial penalties for the winning side.
St Mary’s Yala show Chianda who is boss
St Mary’s Yala rugby team were in a class of their own, dominating Siaya County 15s games with a 46-00 win over Chianda. The win saw them retain the trophy and qualify for the Nyanza region championship.
They managed six tries with five well-converted tries and two penalty kicks to seal their win as they denied Chianda a path through their defense.
In the whole tournament, Ugenya High is the only team that made a successful whitewash cross against the champions in the group stage.
St Anthony’s Kitale hit Bwake Boys
St Anthony’s Boys Kitale clinched the Trans Nzoia County rugby 15s title after defeating Bwake Boys 32-8 to secure their place as champions for the Rift Valley regionals Championship.
In a dominant display during the finals, they scored five tries, with only one successfully converted. Bwake Boys managed a single unconverted try along with a well-taken penalty.

Kisii School maul Cardinal Otunga
Nelvine Lumiti’s coached Kisii School retained the Kisii County Rugby 15s title after they schooled hosts Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho 51-3 to qualify as the champions for the Nyanza regional Championship.
Kisii’s dominance in the game saw them manage seven converted tries, one unconverted try and two well-taken penalties.
Morgan Ochiel managed a hat-trick and was termed the player of the tournament as he displayed confidence and composure throughout the game.
Starford Nyambane also made a statement, having a double line break against the hosts Cardinal Otunga High as he scored a brace in the final match.
The remaining three tries were scored by Chaz Francis, Dickson Ongoro and Trinny Wabuche to make a total of eight tries in the finals as Cardinal Otunga managed a well-taken penalty.
In the Semifinals, Kisii school managed to snatch a 34-00 win against Nyabigena as Cardinal Otunga managed a 32-00 win over Rioma.
Vihiga Boys reign supreme
Vihiga Boys have booked their spot in the regionals as position one and will qualify alongside Chavakali who are second after a 6-3 win in the finals played at the Nyang’ori Boys grounds.
The tough game saw no team crossing the whitewash but rather the win was courtesy of two well-taken penalties while Chavakali only managed a single successful taken penalty conversion.
The two teams have qualified for the Regionals set to be played at the Chavakali Boys High school from the 19th of March.
Koyonzo’s winning streak continues
Koyonzo Boys and Kakamega School will both represent Kakamega County in the Western Regional Championship games set to commence on the 19th of March 2024 Vihiga County
Koyonzo, who had displayed dominance in their first encounters with Kakamega in the group stages snatching a 14-06 win, proved their prowess after managing a 10-3 win in the finals.
The intense match only saw two try scorers Eric Simiyu and Becam Wangila managing to cross the whitewash line in either half for the 10-3 score.
Kakamega High School have had a tough encounter as in the two encounters they have not managed to cross the Koyonzo defense for a try, rather all their scores were earned through well-taken penalties.
