Under the agreement, all registered rugby players will be enrolled in SHA, giving them access to comprehensive health coverage.
The package includes benefits for surgeries, treatment of injuries, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation, a welcome boost in a physically demanding sport where medical expenses often sideline talented athletes.
According to KRU officials, some players have already benefited from SHA’s medical support, saving their careers from being cut short by the high cost of treatment.
The partnership was officially launched during the 2025 Safari 7s tournament, which kicked off on Friday, 10 to Sunday, 12 October at the Nyayo National Stadium.
During the event, SHA has provided ambulances, emergency medical cover, and health awareness activities under the theme “Play Well, Live Well.”
Beyond the tournament, the partnership will extend through the 2025 rugby season with health awareness campaigns, community outreach initiatives, and wellness programs.
To commemorate the partnership, KRU and SHA held a joint tree-planting exercise during Mazingira Day on Friday, 10 October.
Speaking during the announcement, Principal Secretary for Health Dr Ouma Oluga said the partnership reflects the government’s commitment to advancing holistic well-being and preventive healthcare for all Kenyans.
“We have officially partnered with the Kenya Rugby Union because there is no better expression of comprehensive well-being than through sport.
The story of the Social Health Authority embodies the full well-being of the healthcare system and the people we serve,” Dr Oluga said.
He further noted that the partnership aims not only to promote the SHA brand but also to strengthen engagement with the sporting community, expanding access to healthcare and increasing awareness among youth.
“This partnership is forged on merit, trust, and shared purpose, demonstrating how collaboration between health and sport can help build a stronger, healthier nation,” Dr Oluga added.
Present during the signing ceremony were SHA’s Director of Corporate Services, Ibrahim Alio, and KRU Chief Executive Officer, Thomas Odundo.
The collaboration aligns with SHA’s broader mission of moving Kenya closer to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
