Dreadful Shujaa hammered by Australia as poor form persists in Seville 7s opener

Kenya have won only one match in the five played in 2022

The men’s national rugby 7s team Shujaa were hammered 42-0 by Australia on Friday evening as the Innocent ‘Namcos’ Simiyu coached side failed to shake off their poor form at the start of the second HSBC Spain Sevens outing being held in Seville.

Coming into their opening pool D match, Shujaa were hoping to turn around the lethargic display they showed in Malaga last week where they finished last in the 15 team tournament.

However, that was not to be as a dreadful performance put in by the team ended with the Aussies recording their biggest ever win on an HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Circuit as they ran riot in recording six successfully converted tries to condemn Kenya to yet another losing start in their pool D encounter.

It was a cagey start to the game as the opening three minutes flew by without anything to write home about.

However, after a long spell with possession where Shujaa struggled to get on the ball, the Aussies managed to prise open the hapless Kenyan defense as Henry Hutchinson raced to the tryline in opening the scores for his side, Dietrich Roache successfully converting to give them a 7-0 lead.

That first try opened the floodgates for Australia as Roache and Hutchinson once again combined to extend the lead to 14-0 as the former released a cute offload to Hutchinson who landed his brace under the sticks making it easy for Roache to add the extras.

A moment of brilliance from Maurice Longbottom saw Australia successfully execute a set piece routine from a scrum on the half way line as he evaded three Kenyan markers to land the third successful converted try that gave them a 21-0 half time lead.

The half time break did little in cooling off the steam from the yellow and green stripped Aussies and three additional tries from Corey Toole, who got a brace of his own, and Yool Yool ensured the team recorded their biggest win ever on the Series.

Shujaa must now win their remaining two games if they are to have any chances of progressing out of the group stages. They take on Canada and Scotland on Saturday.
