The Oilers will be looking to improve from their disappointing ninth-place finish in Mombasa
Menengai Oilers head coach Gibson Weru has pinpointed areas of improvement ahead of the much-anticipated final leg of the 2024 National 7s Circuit; Prinsloo 7s slated for Saturday 14 to Sunday 15 September at the Nakuru Athletic Club.
The Oilers will be looking to improve from their disappointing ninth-place finish in Mombasa. That was their worst performance in the circuit. Last year, they narrowly lost the Driftwood 7s final after a 10-7 loss to Kabras RFC during sudden death. They were hoping to replicate that performance but things went south.
According to Weru, the side will be keen to improve on attack and defense to maintain the competitive edge of competing teams. This time, they have been placed in Pool A together with Kenya Harlequin, Zetech University, and Mombasa RFC.
“It's one of the worst tournaments we have had in Mombasa in a very long time. We did not execute well in attack and defense and as you know, the margins in Sevens are small on the second day. We re-ignited our quality and were able to bounce back and salvage pride,” Weru offered.
They were dealt a major blow when their key player Beldad Ogeta was declared unfit for the tournament due to injury. Some players were also nursing minor injuries after a tough outing in Mombasa.
Despite that, Weru was confident that the remaining player would rise to the task.
“They have been in training after picking up minor injuries,” he said.
With the team enjoying home advantage this time, the tactician expressed confidence in their abilities. He called on the fans to fill the venue and rally behind them.
“We learnt our lessons last weekend and we need to be at our best from the first match to the last and play to our strengths. It's a home tournament for us and I want the fans to come and cheer us to victory,” he offered.
The Oilers currently sit at position four with 68 points after five legs of the circuit. They managed two finals appearances; the Dala 7s and Kabeberi 7s and they will be looking to stage a repeat.
