
Grateful Shujaa thank public for helping at hour of need ahead of squad announcement

Back in December, the players revealed how they had not been paid for three months by KRU.
The men’s national rugby 7s team, Shujaa, have expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Kenya 7s public family who headed to their financial plea back in December 2022 when the team came out to appeal for monetary help after reveal they had gone for three months without payment from Kenya Rugby Union.
In a post sent out, the team penned their appreciation for the kind gesture shown to them as they revealed the fundraising drive raised a total of Ksh. 600,244.
“To you our Kenya 7s family. Late last year a link circulated asking for you to stand with us financially as we went through a difficult period in which our wages had not been paid. We relied on the spirit of Ujamii which dictates not only togetherness, but the principle of social accountability.
You met our cry for help with zeal and went up in arms to raise awareness about our plight. Because of you, our situation got the attention of the relevant governing bodies, both local and international. Because of you, we managed to raise 600,244 Kenyan shillings which went along way to address the financial challenges that we were facing at the time.

And for all of this and more, we as Kenya 7s Shujaa and our loved ones would like to impress our sincerest gratitude to you our family for your continued love and support through all our endeavours.

And as we begin another year, we would like to wish for all of you, a happy and prosperous 2023, to always standing together, to more victories together and to always raising our flag high and proud. Happy New Year and may God bless you,” the letter from Shujaa read.
Elsewhere, the travelling squad for the Shujaa squad that will be headed to New Zealand and Australia for the fourth and fifth legs of the HSBC World Rugby Seven Series Circuit will be named on Wednesday morning.
“Head Coach Damian McGrath will name the squad travelling to Australia and New Zealand for the fourth and fifth legs of the Sevens World Series in Hamilton, New Zealand (21-22 Jan) and Sydney, Australia (27-29 Jan) on Wednesday 11 January 2023,” a statement from KRU announced.
Shujaa are currently hoping for improved performances after a dismal start to the campaign that has seen them collect nine points from the opening three outings in Hong Kong, Dubai and Cape Town.
The team faces another herculean task after being drawn against Samoa, Fiji and France in Hamilton.
