Floyd Wabwire was in unstoppable form during the 2025 Driftwood Sevens, proving why his time with the national sevens team, Shujaa, has given him a competitive edge at the club level.

The KCB Rugby winger was the standout player of the weekend, scooping the Most Valuable Player (MVP), top try scorer, and top point scorer awards as his team narrowly edged stubborn Strathmore Leos 15-14 to clinch their first Driftwood title since 2019.

Wabwire, a former Daystar Falcons standout, was instrumental in KCB’s title charge, particularly in the semifinal, where he scored two crucial tries in a hard-fought 10-5 win over archrivals Kabras RFC.

Having made his debut for Kenya Sevens at the 2023 Hamilton Sevens, Wabwire has steadily grown into a regular under coach Kevin Wambua.

He was recently in action with the Morans during the 2025 Africa Men’s Sevens in Mauritius, where Kenya finished third.

That international experience, he says, has shaped his mentality and performance.

For every Kenya 7s player, there are goals we have, goals we want to achieve, so we have to stand out, set an example, and set the pace for the rest,” Wabwire said after the tournament.

For the talented youngster, winning the first leg of the National 7s Circuit was a significant milestone heading into the remaining legs.

“I feel great. It has been a while since we won the Driftwood 7s, so it is a milestone for KCB. I challenged myself and it has been rewarded,” he offered.

Wabwire further emphasized that the team came into the tournament with a clear mindset and season targets.

“We set our season goals coming into Driftwood. This is just the first of the many goals. Confidence is very key. We are not underestimating any opponent, and we take each game as a final. The games have been tough, but we managed to get the win,” he offered.

Reflecting on his semifinal performance, the former Daystar Falcons speedster noted that the game awareness worked wonders.

The semifinal was very intense from the kickoff. I was just composed, knew my opponents’ weakness, and when to take the chance,” he revealed.

Now heading into the remaining legs of the National Sevens Circuit, Wabwire is determined to maintain the same high standards.

“I have goals this season. The first thing is, the standards must remain up there. There are just some bare minimums we cannot reach. Watch out for this pace,” he concluded.

For the Prinsloo 7s, the Bankers will square off against a resurgent Nondies, the unpredictable Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA) Monks, and the invitational side Kisumu RFC, who are eager to cause an upset.
