The tournament will be played using a knock-out format
Having been included in the national men’s sevens squad for the 2022 Rugby 7s World Cup, Collins Injera has revealed they will be employing the one-game-at-a-time approach.
The country’s all-time 7s top try scorer and second in the overall world rankings made a return to the squad after head coach Damian McGrath reinstated him.
Speaking after being included in the squad that will head to Cape Town, South Africa for the tournament slated for Friday 9 to 11 September, Injera revealed that they have set their sights on their opener against Tonga.
“It's nice to be back in the sevens team, it has been a while since I was here. I had gone to the 15s and getting a chance to play in the World Cup is huge, of course, everyone would like to represent their nation in the World Cup.
This is a knockout tournament, you lose one game you are out of the competition, for us we just have to take it a game at a time and that is what we have been talking about, the first game is Tonga and that is where all our energies are focused on,” said Injera.
This will be Injera’s fourth appearance in the Rugby Sevens World Cup as he returns to the 7s set up having featured in the 15s game in the 2023 Rugby World Cup qualifiers.
The just concluded World Rugby Sevens Series served up pure entertainment with Australia winning their maiden series title while Kenya finished strong after a poor campaign.
“The series is quite big now, four teams were gunning for the competition, teams have really closed the gap between the top nations and everyone now has a chance of competing.
We finished strongly and Samoa out of nowhere have very good kids and a good style of play. World Rugby is really improving and we have to stay at pace with it, if we don't then we'll lose but we are doing a good job in blending experienced and young players,” added Injera.
