The player was named tournament's MVP, Most Promising Player and included in Dream Team

Strathmore Leos’ Branson Madigu emerged as the Most Valuable and the Most Promising Player in the season opening George Mwangi Kabeberi 7s tournament held and hosted by Mwamba RFC at the RFUEA Grounds this past weekend from 21-22 May 2022.

Madigu, a delight to watch when in motion, proved to be a crucial cog in Leos’s wheels as he powered the varsity side to the main cup final where they narrowly went down to 7s defending champions KCB RFC.

The player proved instrumental in the tournament that welcomed back the National Sevens Circuit after a two year hiatus as he grabbed five tries which was the second most in the competition behind the leading six. Additionally, the back was included in the Kabeberi 7s Team of the Tournament as the country’s rugby governing body Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) unveiled the Awards.

The former Laiser Hill student made his National 7s Circuit debut in 2019 with Homeboyz before moving to Strathmore Leos in 2021.

Kenyan international Jacob Ojee and Kabras RFC’s Keith Embwaga were named as the joint top-try scorers after bagging six tries each in the two-day tournament. Geoffrey Okwatch (KCB), Madigu, Brighton Bakasa (Western Bulls) and Austin Sikutwa (Menengai Oilers) managed five tries each.

Another Kenyan international Levy Amunga from KCB walked away from the tournament as the Top Point Scorer with his 39 points proving out of reach. Embwaga came second with 38 while Ojee and Festus Safari tied in 3rd with 30 points.
