Strathmore Leos and Blak Blad too have proceeded to the quarters
National Sevens Circuit log leaders Kabras RFC, Kakamega Ingo 7s champions Kenya Harlequin, KCB Rugby, Menengai Oilers, and Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA) Monks are through to the last eight of the 2024 Kabeberi 7s after an impressive performance on Day One.
The matches were played on Saturday 24 August in the chilly RFUEA Grounds.
The Sugarmen started their campaign with a narrow 22-17 loss to Strathmore Leos before amending their mistakes to defeat Impala RFC 31-7 in their second pool match. They ended the day by defeating Nakuru RFC 22-12 in the closely contested match.
The Oilers too were building up on their Dala 7s performance where they reached the final but lost to Kabras RFC. They kicked off their hunt by whitewashing Stallions Rugby 43-0 before humbling Kisumu RFC 43-7 and ended the day on a high with a 30-7 victory over the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA) Monks to book a quarterfinal slot.
The Bankers too did not disappoint. They defeated Mount Kenya University (MKU) Thika 39-0 in the opening pool match before hitting Kabeberi 7s hosts Mwamba RFC 29-5 in the second pool match. They tackled Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) Rugby in the final pool match, defeating them 22-5.
Kenya Harlequin, playing on familiar territory, did not taste a loss in their pool stage matches. It was on the same grounds that they narrowly lost 17-12 to Kabras RFC to clinch the second position during Christie 7s.
They started off with a 17-7 victory over Daystar University Falcons before handing Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad a 24-19 defeat in the closely contested second pool match. A 24-12 win over Ngong Road foes Nondies RFC sealed their day.
The 2024 circuit's most improved performers CUEA Monks are also through to the final eight after registering two out of three wins. They handed Kisumu RFC a 10-0 defeat before narrowly defeating Stallions Rugby 19-17. They would however go down 30-7 to Menengai Oilers.
MMUST Rugby, who have been in impressive form this season were off to a bright start in Nairobi. The students defeated Mwamba RFC 10-7 in the opening pool match before handing MKU Thika a 22-0 defeat. They ended the day with a 22-5 loss to the Bankers.
