2024 has been a year of milestones for KCB RFC forward Tyson Maina.
The fledgeling talent transferred from Menengai Oilers to the former Kenya Cup champions in August. This year also saw him make his Kenya Simbas debut where he played a pivotal role in helping them win the Elgon Cup.
He was part of the team that edged rivals Uganda Cranes 27-25 in the Elgon Cup opening leg played on Saturday 16 November before thumping them 21-5 in the return leg played on Saturday 23 November in Uganda.
Speaking to Mozzart Sport, the former U20 player recalled his most memorable moment from the Elgon Cup.
In the final minutes of the first half in Kampala, Kenya were reduced to 14 men after Afred Orege was sent to the naughty chair following a dangerous tackle.
That saw the Ugandans enjoy the numerical advantage for the better part of the half. Despite that, Simbas held on to eventually secure the victory.
“The defensive effort from our side the moment we were down to 14 men in the final leg of Elgon Cup,” Maina recalled of his best moment in a Simbas jersey.
Maina went on to express immense pride in transitioning to the senior team, noting that turning up for the Simbas was a dream come true.
“First, I thank God for being capped this year and winning the Elgon Cup on the second cap. It was a special feeling for me and my family because it tells the progress from U20 to Simbas,” he said.
Despite the pressure of debuting on such a big stage and expectations from fans, Maina quickly found his rhythm.
“I had a lot of pressure for performance on myself but after the kickoff, all was good because my mind was already in the game,” he averred.
Like many players, Maina relies on pre-match rituals to prepare mentally for matches and stay composed.
“I always listen to music and do a lot of band work before games,” he said.
He went on to credit his adaptability and willingness to learn as key factors to his success.
“Adjusting to different situations in the game, being coachable, and learning new things from teammates has helped me a lot throughout the camp,” he offered.
As he looks to the future, his goals are clear. He aspires to grow as a player and contribute meaningfully to the Simbas and his club.
With the 2024/25 Kenya Cup season set for kickoff, Maina is eager to carry the momentum from his national team success back to club rugby.
“I am excited to get back with KCB and push for a strong season. The lessons I’ve learned with the Simbas will help me elevate my game,” he concluded.
The Bankers will start their Kenya Cup campaign with a home match against debutants South Coast Pirates on Saturday 23 November at the Ruaraka Grounds.
