The much-anticipated encounter at the KCB Sports Club in Ruaraka was called off immediately after halftime on Saturday, 7 March, after heavy rains rendered the pitch unplayable.
The two sides were tied at 10-10 when the center referee halted proceedings due to player safety concerns.
However, beyond the weather disruption, the fixture has also drawn attention because of a pre-match agreement regarding the use of national team players.
Mozzart Sport can confirm that both clubs and the Kenya Rugby Union had reportedly agreed not to field Kenya Sevens (Shujaa) players, who are in the national team camp.
Despite this understanding, KCB named and fielded all their available Shujaa players, while Kabras delayed announcing their squad and eventually released it only a few hours before kickoff, with no Shujaa players included.
What the rules say
According to the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) competition regulations, the outcome of an abandoned match depends largely on when the match is stopped.
Under Section 13: Abandonment - Other Causes, the rules state that if a match is abandoned either at halftime or at any point in the second half, the result shall stand.
However, if the abandonment occurs during the first half, the result is declared a draw and the match is replayed at a date determined by the Union in consultation with the teams.
Since the KCB-Kabras encounter was halted after the first half had been completed, the regulations suggest that the 10-10 scoreline could potentially stand as the final result.
The rules further state that in circumstances not clearly covered, the KRU Leagues and Fixtures Committee retains the final authority to determine the next course of action.
Possible outcomes
Based on the regulations, several options remain on the table for the committee:
- Allow the 10-10 scoreline to stand as the final result
- Order a replay of the match depending on the circumstances surrounding the abandonment
- Consider any additional factors, including match reports from the referee and match commissioner
The match officials are expected to submit detailed reports to the competition authorities before a decision is made.
Calendar headache
A replay, if ordered, could present logistical challenges.
The Kenya Cup is approaching the final stretch of the regular season with only a few rounds remaining before the playoffs begin.
Both teams also have commitments in the Enterprise Cup knockout competition, meaning fitting in a replay would require careful scheduling.
Should the draw stand, Kabras RFC would extend their remarkable unbeaten Kenya Cup run to 51 matches, further strengthening their position at the top of the standings.
For KCB, however, the outcome would prolong their wait for a victory over the Sugarmen, having last beaten Kabras in February 2022.
With tensions high and questions surrounding both the abandoned match and the Shujaa player agreement, the rugby fraternity now awaits the verdict from the Kenya Rugby Union’s Fixtures and Leagues Committee.
