Kenya will seek to build from last year's final disappointment against Zimbabwe
Kenya U20 head coach Simon Jawichre has named his final squad of 28 players expected to feature in this year’s Rugby Africa U20 Barthes Trophy running from 20-28 April in Harare, Zimbabwe.
The selection comes months after he had named a 56-man provisional squad that has been taking part in preparations geared towards claiming the title they lost to Zimbabwe in last year’s final at the Nyayo National Stadium.
Among the players making the cut in the team that will be captained by Edmond Omondi are notably Alvin Khavoli and Phillip Okeyo, standout performers in the Kenya Cup for Menengai Oilers and Nakuru RFC respectively.
The squad also includes nine players that featured in last July’s World Rugby U20 Trophy in Nairobi.
They include: Andycole Omondi, Nathan Tsindoli, Faran Juma, James Olela, Patrick Wainaina, Geylord Ngasi, Wycliffe Ogutu, Michael Wamalwa and Iddo Kuta.
Unlike last year’s championships that featured eight teams, this year’s tournament has four teams led by hosts Zimbabwe, Namibia, Tunisia and Kenya.
The team is expected to depart on Thursday morning and will begin their campaign against Namibia on Saturday 20 April.
Kenya’s last meeting against the Southern Africa side ended in a 24-13 win for Chipu in last year’s semifinals.
Format
The teams will battle it out in a round-robin competition over three match days with the team finishing first winning the title and securing Africa’s berth to the World Rugby U20 Trophy 2024 set for 2-17 July in Scotland.
