Kenya Cup: Charging KCB put 80 past Mwamba as Blak Blad end Oilers’ unbeaten streak

KCB and Kabras remain the only sides yet to taste defeat this season.

Curtis Olago’s KCB once again gave another clear sign of their intent in the Kenya Cup this season as they put in a near faultless performance on Saturday afternoon where they condemned Mwamba to humiliating 10-82 defeat in Madaraka.

In the clash that had been billed to at least test KCB judging from recent form, the Bankers left no secret in highlighting the gulf in class between the two sides as they dominated the one sided affair against Kulabu.

After seven minutes of play, back row Felix Ojoo scored the first of his three tries, barging over the whitewash with Darwin Mukidza converting to give KCB a 7-0 lead.

Six minutes later, Mwamba’s Eliakim Kichoi would then pick up a loose ball before embarking on a mazy run that ended with the back row scoring under the posts as Brian Kivasia converted to tie the scores at 7-7.

Having stirred the hornet’s nest, that would prove to be the only try scored by Kulabu as KCB went into second gear.

Two converted quick fire tries from Mike Kimwele and Peter Waitere opened the gap to 7-21 before three more successfully converted tries saw Kulabu trail 7-42 at the halfway interval.

The bankers were unrelenting after the break, Bob Muhati going over for a 47-7 score before Mukidza converted Martin Owilah’s try for a 54-7 score. Mukidza then converted Wamai’s second try before Kivaisa drilled home a penalty to bring the score to 61-10.

Ojoo then landed twice in between Muhati’s try with Johnstone Olindi converting all to secure the result and sixth successive bonus point win for the bankers who stayed top heading into match day seven.

Blak Blad pulled off the result of the round, stunning last season’s finalists Menengai Oilers 17-16 at the Kenyatta University.

Interestingly enough, it was the Oilers who went ahead through Davis Nyaundi’s try, Tony Oketch coming through with a conversion and penalty to give the Nakuru based side a 10-0 lead.

The boot of Andy Gathua cut the deficit to 10-3 at the break before further penalty goals from Kevin Karue and Lionel Ekesa brought Blad to 10-9.

Oketch then drilled home a penalty to put Oilers 13-9 up but John Oketch’s try saw Blad go 14-13 up before the two sides traded penalties, Blad running off with the famous win that handed Oilers their first defeat this season.

Meanwhile, it was business as usual for defending champions Kabras Sugar who crushed hosts Nakuru 42-0 at the Nakuru Athletic Club.

After not playing last weekend due to their postponed clash against Homeboyz, the sugar millers batted away any signs of rustiness as they secured the comfortable victory.

Homeboyz were 31-7 winners over Mean Machine at the Jamhuri Park as Masinde Muliro fell to a home defeat, losing 11-21 to a rejuvenated Kenya Harlequin in Lurambi.

Strathmore Leos temporarily arrested their freefall as they defeated Catholic Monks 35-15 at Madaraka.
