The Ngong Road-based club described the move as a deliberate restructuring plan aimed at strengthening the club’s financial health and competitiveness ahead of the 2025/26 rugby XVs season.
In a statement signed by chairman Victor Sudi, Quins revealed that the restructuring process involved presenting revised contracts to all players, in line with a broader long-term vision focused on revenue diversification, financial discipline, and sustainable budget management.
“A strong majority of the playing squad understands the restructuring and have accepted the new terms presented. Some players have chosen not to continue under the new terms and have been formally released.
We thank all outgoing players for their service to the club and wish them success in their future endeavours,” Sudi said.
The clarification follows weeks of speculation over a mass exit at the Ngong Road-based side, with reports indicating that close to 30 players, including key starters, had opted against renewing under the new framework.
Quins, however, stressed that the decision was not borne out of crisis, but rather part of a carefully considered realignment designed to safeguard the future.
The club noted that all outstanding financial commitments to players had been cleared by September 2025.
“Kenya Harlequin continues to invest in holistic player welfare,” the statement added, citing medical cover, nutrition programs, gym facilities, and mentorship initiatives as central to the club’s support system.
Despite the significant departures, the leadership maintained optimism that the restructuring would create room for a leaner but sharper squad capable of competing strongly in the Kenya Cup.
"The future of Kenya Harlequin is bright, and together we remain committed to writing the next chapter of excellence both on and off the pitch,” Sudi concluded.
Quins lifted the 2024 National Sevens Circuit title but dropped to a seventh-place finish this year with 62 points.
They also ended last season’s Kenya Cup in fifth place with 34 points, a level of performance now under threat given the mass player departures.
