This match will be used as a build-up for the annual competition in the Dubai 7s veterans’ matches

Kenya Legends will play a touring side from the United Kingdom later in the month, Mozzart Sport can exclusively reveal.

This match will be used as a build-up for the annual competition in the Dubai 7s veterans’ matches.

Speaking after their 24-15 victory over Uganda, which secured them the Legends Cup at RFUEA Grounds, Eddie Omondi noted that they will aim to extend their dominance when they face the UK side.

“We have a fixture with a touring side from the UK sometime next month, and we still have the Dubai 7s, which we will be participating in. We love taking part in it,” Omondi said in his post-match interview.

Omondi who played position eight further admitted that age was starting to take its toll on them, but was glad for the show they put up.

“It’s not getting any easier, our age is beginning to show. A big thank you to the Ugandans for always gracing this occasion. We are very grateful to them. I also want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who showed up today, despite the weather not being kind, they stuck with us throughout the game,” he offered.

Despite the win, the skipper congratulated Uganda Legends for putting up a fight. He called on his teammates to work harder to be a step ahead of their opponents.

“Uganda are playing very well, and it’s just a matter of time before they catch up with us. We have to keep working harder,” he added.

The Kenya Legends claimed their fourth consecutive victory over Uganda in the Legends Cup, extending their dominance in the regional rugby rivalry.

But how did the Legends Cup start and why?

Some years back, Nondies, the most successful Kenya Cup club, got their veterans' side to tour Southern Africa, Dubai and Europe but the tour fizzled.

However, former Nondies player Eddie Omondi approached Auka Gacheo, who had just been elected as Nondies chairman in 2016 to explore the possibilities of reviving the Nondies Veteran side.

The side was reborn and participated in the 2019 Dubai Sevens. They did not tour in 2020 and 2021 because of Covid-19.

Mwamba and Kenya Harlequin were incorporated into the side that transformed to Kenya Legends and reached the Dubai Sevens semi-finals in 2022 and quarter-finals in 2023.

Uganda was approached for a series of matches on the sidelines of the 2022 Dubai Sevens and the Legends Cup was born.
