Kenya Lionesses wrapped up their pool matches in the HSBC Challenger Series with a hard-fought win after seeing off Colombia 12-5 in a closely contested match played on Friday 11 April.
The tries were scored thanks to second-half brilliance from Grace Adhiambo and Sinaida Nyachio.
The victory offered a strong finish despite back-to-back defeats to Thailand earlier in the second pool match.
In a tightly contested match, it was Kenya who found their rhythm in the second half.
Adhiambo crossed the whitewash after a slick pass from Nyachio.
There was a moment of suspense as the referee consulted with her assistant to check whether the pass had gone forward, but the decision went Kenya’s way, and the try stood.
Nyachio stepped up to add the extras, giving Kenya a deserved lead.
Nyachio would then cap off a superb performance with a try of her own, though the conversion went wide, it widened Kenya's advantage.
The match turned into a battle for possession thereafter, with both sides testing each other’s defensive resolve.
Maribel Mestra’s side, likely buoyed by their earlier performances, looked to emulate their Challenger Series form from South Africa, where they had also faced Kenya in a similarly tight contest.
Despite losing the match against a spirited Thailand, the Dennis Mwanja-coached Lionesses had already secured a spot in the HSBC SVNS playoffs in Los Angeles next month.
With their sights now set on a place in the World Rugby Sevens Series, Kenya will be hoping to build on this momentum heading into the knockout stages.
