The iconic 'Kenyan Corner' known for its vibrant energy and excitement at international sevens rugby events, is about to take things to a whole new level.

This is after award-winning Kenyan DJ Pierra Makena is set to make history as the first African DJ and artist to perform at the rugby sevens main arena during the HSBC SVNS Series in Perth, Australia.

The third leg of the prestigious series will take place from Friday 24 to Saturday 26 January 2025.

An excited Makena shared the milestone with her fans on social media.

“Breaking News! Guys, I cannot keep calm. First African DJ and artist to perform at the Rugby 7s main arena in Australia,” she posted.

Makena’s historic performance is expected to add a unique cultural flavour to the tournament and showcase African artistry on the global stage.

Her presence will undoubtedly fuel the energy as fans gear up for an unforgettable experience.

On the pitch, the Kenya Sevens national team; Shujaa face a formidable challenge, having been drawn in Pool C, dubbed the 'Pool of Death'. They will go head-to-head with rugby heavyweights Fiji, Australia, and Uruguay.

The rivalry between Shujaa and hosts Australia promises to reignite its characteristic drama.

In their most recent clash at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Kenya fell 21-7 in their second game. However, Shujaa redeemed themselves later that year at the Cape Town 7s, defeating Australia 19-12 in a stunning comeback, despite playing with six men. The Perth showdown is shaping up to be another chapter in this brewing rivalry.

Facing Fiji is always a monumental task for Kevin Wambua’s charges. Shujaa last met the Pacific Islanders at the 2023 Vancouver 7s, where Fiji emerged victorious with a 31-12 win.

However, Kenya’s historic 30-7 triumph over Fiji in the 2016 Singapore 7s final which secured their first-ever HSBC World Sevens Series title remains a beacon of inspiration for the team.

Uruguay, though less renowned than their pool mates, cannot be underestimated. Recently promoted to the HSBC SVNS Series, the South Americans have shown remarkable resilience, fighting hard to avoid relegation.

Their tenacity makes them a potential spoiler, and Kenya will need to be sharp to secure a win against this hungry side.
