Obiero died on Monday, 23 February, after a tragic hit-and-run accident in Nairobi, bringing a sudden end to a life devoted to nurturing talent and growing the game at the grassroots level.
At the time of his death, he was actively involved in the university league, continuing to shape young players and leaving a lasting imprint on campus rugby.
His final appearance on the touchline came just two days earlier, on Saturday, 21 February, when Africa Nazarene University battled to a thrilling 24-24 draw against Kenya Police University. That pulsating encounter now stands as his last contribution to the sport he so deeply loved.
In a heartfelt statement, Western Bulls Rugby Club paid glowing tribute to their former player and brother.
“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we confirm the passing of our former player and brother, Obiero Solomon, following a tragic hit-and-run incident in Nairobi. Solomon was not just a player; he was a pillar of our foundation,” the statement read.
Obiero was a founding member of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) Rugby in 2007, a team that later evolved into Western Bulls Rugby Club in October 2011. From the club’s formative years, he wore the badge with pride, dedicating himself fully to its growth and identity.
He remained committed to the Bulls until the conclusion of the 2023 season, serving not only as a dependable player but also stepping into a leadership role as a player-coach. His influence both on and off the pitch helped shape the culture and brotherhood that define the club today.
At the end of the 2023 campaign, Obiero embraced a new challenge, taking up the role of head coach at Africa Nazarene University. The transition reflected his passion for mentorship and development, as he sought to guide and inspire the next generation of rugby players.
His death comes barely two months after the rugby fraternity mourned the loss of Strathmore Leos lock Felix ‘Chano’ Odhiambo, who passed away on Friday, 2 January, after succumbing to injuries sustained in a road accident on New Year’s Eve.
Mozzart Sport joins the rugby fraternity in mourning Solomon Obiero. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
