This visionary programme is backed by a multimillion-shilling sponsorship from global aviation company Menzies Aviation.
The two-year partnership, valued at over USD90,000 (approximately Ksh11.6 million), marks a major milestone in KRU’s grassroots rugby development strategy and introduces a fresh approach to youth empowerment through sport.
The initiative is a joint effort between KRU, ChildFund Rugby, and Menzies Aviation, placing Kenya on the map among countries using rugby as a catalyst for building inclusive, empowered communities.
The programme targets youth aged 11 to 16 and will employ World Rugby’s T1 non-contact format, creating a safe, structured environment to teach both rugby fundamentals and vital life skills.
Its first phase, Playing for Equality, will focus on promoting gender balance, leadership, and social inclusion, with over 250 youth expected to take part. Notably, more than 50% of the participants will be girls.
Speaking during the official unveiling ceremony, KRU Chief Executive Officer Thomas Odundo praised the initiative’s dual impact, developing both the sport and the people involved in it.
“Investing in the next generation is how we build a lasting legacy and position rugby as a platform for personal and community growth.
Our partnership with ChildFund Rugby is also key to improving internal systems and ensuring long-term sustainability," Odundo said.
As part of the programme’s implementation, KRU will also train youth coaches aged 16 to 25 who will lead 90-minute sessions blending sport with lessons on resilience, confidence, and leadership.
KRU Chairperson Harriet Okach hailed Pass It Back as a powerful tool to shape not just future players, but leaders of tomorrow.
"It offers knowledge, instils values, and imparts life-changing skills. We thank our partners and call on all stakeholders to embrace rugby as a tool for transforming lives,” she said.
Menzies Aviation Kenya General Manager Mohammed Tambi reaffirmed the company’s long-term commitment to the initiative, describing it as a strategic partnership beyond simple sponsorship.
"Our investment in Pass It Back is about more than just money. This is about empowering youth and leaving a meaningful, lasting impact on future generations,” Tambi noted.
The launch also coincides with the global Pass It Back programme’s 10th anniversary, underscoring its proven success in using rugby to drive positive social change.
