Los Pumas claim historic victory over All Blacks in Christchurch as Australia stun Springoks

The All Blacks have now lost four men's Tests in 2022; only twice in history have they lost more in a calendar year.

A determined Argentina made history on Saturday as they recorded their first ever victory over the All Blacks in New Zealand, triumphing 25-18 in Christchurch in a bruising Rugby Championship match played at the Orangetheory Stadium.

The All Blacks scored two tries to the Pumas’ one but it was Emiliano Bofelli’s six penalty kicks that proved the difference on a typical winter’s night.

New Zealand were ill-disciplined throughout the match, conceding 14 penalties throughout the match, and lost flanker Shannon Frizell to the sin bin with 10 minutes left to play.

It is a huge blow for the All Blacks who appeared to have recovered from a worrying run of poor form when they beat the world champions, South Africa, earlier this month.

Argentina continue on their upward trajectory under coach Michael Cheika, who oversaw an impressive 48-17 victory over Australia on 13 August and they now top the Rugby Championship table after three matches.

After Boffelli kicked six penalties, Juan Martín González scored a second-half try to earn the Pumas this famous win – their first against the All Blacks on New Zealand soil.

In the other game, the Springboks produced possibly their worst attacking performance under coach Jacques Nienaber as they slumped to a 25-17 loss at the hands of the Wallabies in their Castle Lager Rugby Championship test in Adelaide on Saturday.

While the Boks dominated both possession and territory - to the tune of close to 60 percent - they never used the chances they had and allowed Australia to score when they had the opportunity.

Only two late tries by Kwagga Smith prevented the scoreline from being a rout and put a better look to the final result than the performance deserved.

With it the hoodoo of playing in Australia continued, and again it was a similar script to so many other test matches down under for the Springboks.
