Kenya Simbas utility forward Thomas Okeyo Ongera is set to make his Currie Cup Premier Division debut for the Griffons when the side hosts defending champions Pumas in Welkom, South Africa on Sunday 16 April.

Steeped in history and tradition, the Currie Cup dates back to 1891. The tournament is regarded as the cornerstone of South Africa's rugby heritage, and the coveted gold trophy remains the most prestigious prize in South African domestic rugby
Okeyo, who debuted for the Simbas in 2021, previously turned out for former Kenya Cup champions Nakuru and South African Varsity Cup side University of Johannesburg.
He has grown to become a regular fixture in the Simbas pack over the past three years, most recently featuring at the Rugby World Cup (RWC) 2023 Final Qualification Tournament in Dubai in November last year.
He will become the first Kenyan to play in the Currie Cup’s Premier Division. The other Kenyan to come close to the feat was Dan Adongo who was named in the Sharks squad for the 2011 Currie Cup but failed to feature in that competition.
Okeyo landed a scholarship to the University of Johannesburg where he made his debut in the Varsity Cup a year ago with the institution as the team went on to finish sixth on the eight-team log.
