Kenya 7s national team, Shujaa, suffered their second defeat of the ongoing Paris 2024 Olympics after falling 21-14 to Australia in their second pool match played on Wednesday, July 24.
The Kevin Wambua-coached side was hoping to bounce back from a 31-12 defeat at the hands of Argentina in their first pool match.
The game was fast-paced and thrilling, with both teams displaying exceptional skill and determination. Australia struck the first blow, capitalizing on a defensive lapse by the Kenyan team. However, Kenya responded swiftly with a try from Tony Omondi, which was successfully converted.
The remainder of the first half saw both teams engage in intense attacks and resolute defense, with Kenya unfortunately losing possession in their own 22-meter area. Australia made the most of this opportunity to score, leaving the halftime score at 14-7 in their favor.
The second half proved to be a physical battle, with Kenya struggling to find a way through the Australian defense. Despite their efforts, it was Australia who extended their lead with a well-executed try and successful conversion and in the end picked a 21-7 victory.
Kenya will be looking to redeem themselves when they face Samoa in the final pool match slated for Thursday at 3:00 PM.
This was the 12th meeting between the two familiar foes since the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Out of the 11 previous meetings, Kenya managed only two wins: during the 2019 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series and the 2023 edition, which was their last meeting. They have shared spoils twice, with Australia winning the rest.
For the first time ever, Rugby Sevens kicked off two days before the Paris Olympics opening ceremony. The ranking matches and the final will take place on July 27, as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) rules demand that no medals are awarded and no athletes are eliminated before the opening ceremony.
