Prinsloo 7s: Third time lucky for Oilers as they clinch Cup after beating Leos

The win takes Oilers top of the National Seven's.

Menengai Oilers made boisterous home fans ecstatic after lifting the Prinsloo 7s following a narrow 12-7 win over Strathmore Leos in a tense cup final after losing the Driftwood and Dala 7s finals.

Oilers now have a massive advantage heading into the final leg of the circuit which is the Kakamega 7s with KCB and Strathmore Leos chasing hot on their heels.

The game was off to a cagey start as both teams made basic handling errors which was a sign of nerves in the cup finale that drew a multitude of fans with the stands packed to the rafters.

Oilers however got things going when Stephen Arunga's quick thinking after catching the Strathmore sweeper off guard with his kick and he chased it as it bounced inside the try box and just had enough pace to touch down with Geoffrey Ominde adding the extras.

Gibson Weru's side went into the half break leading 7-0 as they were able to successfully manage the game despite some late pressure from the Varisty side.

Oilers continued from where they left from in the second half as Dennis Abukuse powered through the try line after a stealing a line out from a well calculated kick from Geoffrey Ominde.

Strathmore however refused to go down without a fight as Branson Madigu who is the club's top try scorer in the circuit touched down to cut Oilers lead to just five points.

George 'Japolo' Ooro had the chance to level matters with the kick to come but he knocked on the ball after a try saving tackle from the Oilers sweeper.

Oilers again kept a cool head as they managed to hold on to their lead and wither a late storm from Strath with Ominde kicking the ball out to signal the end of the game as the ardent Oilers fans stormed the pitch.
