Rivals Uganda confirm 2022 Safari 7s attendance

The noisy neighbours become the first international side to confirm participation with KRU yet to announce participants

Kenya’s eternal rugby rivals Uganda have jumped the gun ahead of Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) as they confirmed their participation in the 25th edition of the Safari Sevens tournament set to take place from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 October 2022 at the RFUEA Grounds.

With KRU still holding the card containing the list of confirmed participants close to their chest, Uganda let the cat out of the bag by confirming their participation in the 2022 edition of the event expected to feature twelve men and six women teams.

“Uganda will be competing in the 25th edition of the Safari 7s tournament that will take place at the RFUEA Ground Ngong Road from October 14 to 16.

A squad of 21 players from various rugby clubs has been summoned for training ahead of this tournament. The team will be led by Head Coach Allan Otim, Garry Mabonga (Team Manager), Gloria Nalwoga (Team Doctor),” Uganda Rugby reported on their website.

Former Uganda Men’s Sevens international Allan Otim, who serves as Rugby Cranes XVs and Heathens Rugby Club Strength & Conditioning Coach, has been handed the reins of the academy side that will represent Uganda at the Safari Sevens.

The players have been picked from the Uganda Men’s Sevens national team and Uganda’s ongoing Rugby Sevens Series 2022.

Alex Aturinda, Timothy Kisiga, Adrian Kasito, Nobert Okeny and Karim Arinaitwe have been on national duty since the start of the year and have represented the country at the Rugby Africa Men’s Sevens, Commonwealth Games, World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series, and the Rugby World Cup Sevens.

Uganda finished fifth out of twelve participating teams in the last edition which was played at the Nyayo National Stadium won by the men’s national rugby sevens side Shujaa.
